The Mental Health Boost of Mindfulness

Find anxiety and stress reduction with a mindfulness-based Austin counselor.

CNN.com recently featured a story on mindfulness and the role it plays in removing stress from the body.

The subject of the article is Lillian Waugh, historian and former professor at West Virginia University. After years of being the go-to source for information at WVU and battling the incessant waves of emails and phone calls, Waugh jumped at the opportunity to participate in a study on strategies for handling stress at work.

Half of the study participants received written instructions on how to reduce stress, and the other half (including Waugh) received training on mindfulness techniques such as yoga poses, breathing patterns, stretches, and meditation. The purpose of mindfulness is rooted in the teachings of Buddhism and promotes actions and behaviors that lead a person to engage inner peace and live fully in each moment (instead of worrying about the past or future). The outcome of the study indicated that the group who received mindfulness training experienced significantly less daily stress and negative health symptoms in comparison to the group who received the pamphlet of instructions. Waugh also reported specific improvements from the mindfulness training, including reduced back pain that had once been chronic and improved co-worker communication and relationships.

Today, the technique of mindfulness for mental health improvement is gaining positive awareness as mindfulness-based practices such as yoga and tai chi are growing in popularity and availability. Many counselors have also recognized the benefits of mindfulness training and incorporate the techniques into their therapy sessions. In additions to sessions with an Austin counselor, interested participants can attends mindfulness-based workshops in Austin for additional anxiety and stress reduction.
